Off mainland of Nagasaki Prefecture is an island called Hashima, or commonly refered to as Gunkanjima, which translates to Battleship Island. It was once a coal mining island with an overwhemlingly high population density, which once claimed to have the highest population denisty in the world [thought it seems that some disagree]. In the 1970s the island was closed down entirely and people left so quickly that they abandoned many things. Since the island has been shut down, typhoons have wrecked much of the island making a total ghost town. Today it is prohibited to go to the island.  However, an ALT in Omura went with a friend who is friends with some fishermen. They went out together on a tiny fishing boat and I happened to run into him as he was picking up his pictures at Jusco. The pictures were WILD and he said the island was totally creepy since the only people alive on the island were the fisherman and his friend. Since seeing his pictures, I've taken and interest in going there myself!
